Insurance for engineering and infrastructure firms
Consulting engineers, surveyors, project managers and the contractors who deliver roads, utilities and public works. The liability follows the design and the certification for years after the project opens.
The design, the works and the public around them
Professional Indemnity
Claims that a design, calculation, inspection or certification was wrong, including the defence of claims from principals and the public long after completion.
Professional Indemnity coverContractors All Risk
Contract works and plant for the firms that deliver as well as design, on an annual basis or per project to suit the principal.
Contractors All Risk coverPublic & Products Liability
Injury and property damage during site visits, inspections and construction, with limits matched to government and principal contracts.
Liability coverThe liability outlasts the project by a decade
Engineering claims are slow to arrive and expensive to defend.
Long tail
Infrastructure claims can arrive a decade after practical completion. Professional indemnity has to be maintained, and the retroactive date protected, for as long as the liability lasts.
Government contracts
State and federal panels set high limits, wide indemnities and long run-off requirements. Agreeing to them without the policy to match leaves the firm carrying the difference.
Joint ventures
Alliances and joint ventures share liability in ways the standard policy does not anticipate. Each party's cover has to be checked against the joint venture agreement.
A settlement crack, and a design under question
An illustrative example of how Ardent can make the difference in a time of need.
A commercial slab showed differential settlement two years after completion. The owner alleged the geotechnical interpretation in the design was wrong and claimed the cost of rectification.
We notified it as a circumstance the day the first letter arrived, which held the claim in the policy year then in force, and had the insurer's technical panel review the design early.
The expert review narrowed the firm's exposure to a fraction of the amount claimed. Defence costs and the eventual contribution were met under the policy.
Responds under Professional Indemnity
This is an illustrative example. Every claim is assessed by the insurer on its own facts and under the terms of the policy.
What insurers expect to see
Engineering covers are rated on the disciplines you practise, the fee income and the contracts you sign. We go through them with you each year so the policy keeps pace with the projects.
- Retroactive date preserved from the first policy the firm held
- Limits and run-off that meet every government and principal contract
- Every discipline practised declared, including certification and inspection work
- Joint venture and alliance agreements read against the policy wording
- Fee income declared at current levels, split by project type
- Contract works and public liability where the firm delivers as well as designs

What a client says about Ardent
A thorough and extremely proficient team, compared to any past experiences, for our company PI and PL insurances. A pleasure to deal with.
With Ardent, I have full confidence in our insurance-cover, which has been challenging in the past, given our niche requirements.
