Insurance for food and beverage producers

Food manufacturers, breweries, wineries, distillers and packaged goods brands sell products that people consume. When a batch goes wrong the costs run from the recall to the retailer to the customer who was harmed.

Three covers for the product

What you make, where you make it and what happens when it stops

Public & Products Liability

Products liability for everything you make, bottle, pack or import, including the claims that follow contamination, allergens and mislabelling.

Liability cover

Property Insurance

Production facilities, refrigeration, packaging lines and stock, with perishable stock covered for spoilage after a breakdown or power failure.

Property cover

Business Interruption

The income lost while a facility is closed or a product is off sale after an insured event, with the extra cost of producing elsewhere in the meantime.

Where producers get caught out

The recall arrives before the claim does

Food and beverage losses start in the cool room and end on the supermarket shelf.

Recall

A recall costs freight, destruction, retailer credits and public notices before any liability claim arrives. Standard liability policies exclude those costs unless recall cover is added.

Spoilage

A compressor failure on a long weekend can destroy a cool room of stock. Deterioration of stock is a separate cover with its own limit, and it is often left off.

Retailer contracts

Supermarkets and distributors require liability limits, recall cover and indemnities as a condition of supply. The policy has to meet them before the first order ships.

Claims case study

A recall that started with one label

An illustrative example of how Ardent can make the difference in a time of need.

What happened

An allergen declaration was missed on a production run. Product had already gone to several national accounts and had to come off shelves.

What Ardent did

Recall cover sat alongside the products liability section, with recall expenses and lost gross profit both insured. We had the insurer's recall consultant engaged the same day.

The outcome

The withdrawal costs, the destroyed stock and the lost margin were covered. The accounts stayed because the recall was handled quickly.

Responds under Public & Products Liability

This is an illustrative example. Every claim is assessed by the insurer on its own facts and under the terms of the policy.

Before renewal

What insurers expect to see

Food and beverage covers are rated on the products, the processes and the retailers you supply. We go through them with you each year so new lines and new customers are inside the policy.

  • Product recall cover with a limit that reflects the retailers you supply
  • Deterioration of stock cover on every cool room and freezer
  • Liability limits that meet your largest retailer's supply agreement
  • Export markets declared, with the territory and jurisdiction extended to match
  • Machinery breakdown on the plant that stops production
  • Liquor licence conditions and excise obligations noted where you produce alcohol
