Insurance for transport and fleet operators

Couriers, freight carriers, trade fleets and any business that puts staff on the road every day. The vehicles, the goods on board and the liability that travels with them each need their own cover.

Three covers for the road

The vehicles, the load and the liability that travels with them

Motor Fleet

Accident, theft and third party property damage across every vehicle you run, on one policy with one renewal date and agreed value options for specialised units.

Motor Fleet cover

Marine Cargo

Goods in transit by road, sea and air, whether you carry your own stock or freight for others, from the moment goods are loaded until they are signed for.

Marine Cargo cover

Public & Products Liability

Injury and property damage away from the vehicle: loading docks, customer premises and the goods you deliver.

Liability cover
Where operators get caught out

A motor policy covers the truck, and very little else

Transport claims tend to fail on a condition rather than a coverage gap.

Carrier's liability

Carrying goods for others creates a legal liability for loss or damage that a motor policy does not cover. It needs a carrier's or cargo policy written for the contracts you sign.

Driver declarations

Young, unlicensed or undeclared drivers, and drivers with recent claims, are conditions on the policy. A driver the insurer has never heard of can void a claim.

Downtime

A written-off truck can be replaced within weeks. The income lost while it is off the road, and the hire cost of a replacement, are only covered if the policy says so.

Claims case study

A rollover, and a load that belonged to someone else

An illustrative example of how Ardent can make the difference in a time of need.

What happened

A prime mover left the road on a wet bend. The vehicle was written off and the freight it carried was destroyed, and that freight belonged to a customer.

What Ardent did

The fleet policy and the carriers' goods cover were placed together, with limits set against the highest value load the client actually carries.

The outcome

The vehicle and the customer's goods were both paid. The customer stayed because the freight claim was settled without a fight.

Responds under Motor Fleet

This is an illustrative example. Every claim is assessed by the insurer on its own facts and under the terms of the policy.

Before renewal

What insurers expect to see

Fleet policies are rated on the schedule, the drivers and the claims history. We go through all three with you each year so the program reflects the fleet you run now.

  • Every vehicle listed with the right use, including trailers and hired vehicles
  • Driver records checked, and the insurer's driver conditions understood by whoever allocates the keys
  • Carrier's liability or cargo cover matched to the contracts and consignment notes you use
  • Sums insured for specialised vehicles and fit-outs set at agreed value
  • Hire car or downtime cover where a vehicle off the road costs you income
  • Workers compensation and personal accident cover for owner drivers
