Insurance for jewellers
Retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and valuers carry risks that a standard business pack was never written for. Sarah and Sophie have 40 years' combined experience in Jewellers Block and look after Ardent's jewellery trade clients from first quote to claim.
Stock, storage and the pieces that matter
Jewellers Block
Stock in trade and display stock, customer goods in trust, money, work in progress, goods in transit and the business interruption that follows a loss. Placed with specialist underwriters who know the trade.
Jewellers Block coverPrivate Vault
Cover for jewellery, gemstones, precious metals and documents held in a private vault, and for the trips to and from storage. Vault storage on its own does not insure the contents.
Private Vault coverValuables
Agreed value, worldwide cover for individual pieces and collections: jewellery and watches, fine art, wine and collectibles. Often the right answer for a principal's own items.
Valuables coverCover changes the moment stock leaves the premises
The most common gap we see is the assumption that stock is covered wherever it goes.
Sendings
Shipping and postage of stock to customers, suppliers or other stores. Limits, carriers and packaging conditions all affect whether a parcel is covered.
Outwards entrustments
Stock handed to cutters, setters, polishers and other trades. While it is in their hands it needs to be named in your policy or theirs.
Personal conveyance
Staff carrying stock to the post office, to appointments or to the vault. Most policies set conditions on who carries what, and how much, before the cover applies.
Stock taken between the shop and the valuer
An illustrative example of how Ardent can make the difference in a time of need.
A staff member was carrying pieces to an independent valuer when the stock was taken. The loss happened away from the premises and outside a locked safe.
We had set the away-from-premises limit against how the business actually moves stock, and the carrying conditions on the policy matched what staff were doing in practice.
The loss was paid at the insured value. The policy did not fall over on a carrying condition the business could never have met.
Responds under Jewellers Block
This is an illustrative example. Every claim is assessed by the insurer on its own facts and under the terms of the policy.
What insurers expect to see
Jewellers Block policies carry conditions that most other business covers do not. We go through them with you each year so the procedures on paper match how the shop runs day to day.
- Alarm tested within the last 12 months
- CCTV covering the key risk areas, with footage kept for 30 days or more
- Opening and closing procedures that match the policy conditions
- Stock levels declared after Christmas, and before trade shows
- New staff, refurbishments and new locations reported as they happen
- Professional indemnity for valuations, where you provide them
